MoCo School Board Approves Plan To Offer Condoms In Health Rooms Of All High Schools

by MCS Staff
Last night, the Montgomery County school board approved a plan to offer condoms to students at all MCPS high schools.

This decision comes on the heels of MoCo health officials declaring a “public health crisis” with the increase of sexually transmitted infections in adolescents and young adults.

The most recent data showed a 17.5% increase in chlamydia cases and a 29% increase in gonorrhea cases in the county.

Condoms were previously available at MCPS high schools with health centers (Gaithersburg, Northwood, Watkins Mill and Wheaton), but the latest information spurred board of education member, Jill Ortman-Fouse and county council member, George Leventhal to push the idea of offering condoms in all public high schools.

Any students interested in obtaining condoms would have to ask for them and the initiative is expected to be implemented before the end of 2018.
