Montgomery County Ends Free Bagels and Pizza at Planet Fitness… For Now

by MCS Staff
Montgomery County has notified Planet Fitness that their current method of providing “Bagel Mornings” and “Pizza Nights” to their members does not comply with its interpretation of state law.

Planet Fitness was founded in 1992 and uses a non-intimidating, low-cost model to cater to what their executives believe is a much larger segment of the population.

Though giving away bagels and pizza may seem counterintuitive, Planet Fitness only gives away bagels on the second Tuesday of each month and pizza on the first Monday of each month.

The tradition began as a simple display of gratitude to members at one location has become a fun way for members to meet, gather and build community at all of their locations, according to Planet Fitness.

An e-mail sent to all members contained the following message:

“We have been notified by the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Resources that our method of providing Bagel Mornings and Pizza Nights does not comply with it’s interpretation of State law. Due to this we will have to temporarily suspend providing bagels and pizza in your club. As you may know, we have adhered to the same quality standards in our Montgomery County locations that are used throughout Maryland as well as in more than 1,800 Planet Fitness locations throughout North America.

We will continue to work with the County to satisfy it’s demands and hope to get you your Bagel Mornings and Pizza Nights back as soon as possible. Should you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to us at the club.

The Planet Fitness Team”
