Montgomery County to Offer Free Webinar Series on Installing EV Charging Stations in Condos, Co-ops and Townhome Communities on Sept. 6 and Sept. 11

Per MCPD:
For Immediate Release: Thursday, September 1, 2022
Montgomery County will be offering free webinars on Tuesday, Sept. 6, and on Sunday, Sept. 11, on understanding the process of installing electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in condominiums, co-ops and townhome communities. The County Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), the Department of Permitting Services (DPS), the Office of Common Ownership Communities and the Montgomery County Green Bank are hosting the webinar series.

The webinars will take place from 6 -8 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 6, and from 10 a.m.-noon. on Sunday, Sept. 11.

During the webinars, participants will learn what is needed to install EV charging stations in their communities.  Experts will answer questions on subjects including:

  • What are the benefits of EV charging?
  • How many chargers should be installed?
  • How to manage shared parking?
  • What are the associated costs, incentives and financing available?
  • What should people expect from permitting and construction?

“As an EV owner, I know firsthand that charging happens at home,” said County Executive Marc Elrich. “But for people who live in condominiums and other multifamily communities, a lack of convenient, affordable charging can be a significant barrier to owning an EV. These webinars demonstrate our County’s strong support for the transition to electric vehicles. This is just the beginning of this excellent work.”

County Climate Change Officer and Acting DEP Director Adriana Hochberg said the County continues to take steps to make owning electric vehicles easier and more practical, particularly for residents of multifamily and townhome communities that make up more than half of the County’s housing stock.

“Home charging makes driving electric easier and is an important asset for people living in condos, co-ops, and townhomes with shared parking,” said Ms. Hochberg. “We are already moving the needle here in Montgomery County as multiple communities have installed charging stations or have begun exploring the process.”

Councilmembers Andrew Friedson and representatives from DEP, DPS, Pepco’s EV Smart Program and the Green Bank will make presentations. The president of the Clarksburg Condominium II Association, a community where six charging stations were recently installed, will talk about his community’s experiences.

“Expanding electric vehicle charging to more multifamily housing areas is key to a broad and equitable adoption of EVs in the County,” said DPS Deputy Director Ehsan Motazedi. “We hope these webinars inspire and move communities and property owners into action.”
