Police Investigate Possible Shooting on MD 200/ICC

This morning the westbound lanes of Maryland 200 (ICC) at Georgia Avenue (MD 97) were closed for several hours due to police activity. The Maryland Transportation Authority has just released information regarding a “possible shooting” that occurred around 12:51am Monday morning, where evidence suggests a vehicle was struck and a passenger was grazed by a bullet. Per MDTA:
Police Seek Information after Vehicle Struck, Passenger Grazed; Witnesses Asked to Call 410-537-6905
Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) Police Officers are investigating a possible shooting that occurred early this morning along the Intercounty Connector (ICC)/MD 200 in Montgomery County.

At 12:51 a.m., MDTA Police Dispatch received a call for a vehicle traveling westbound on the ICC/MD 200 that had been possibly struck by gunfire. Responding officers located a gold 2007 Toyota Sienna van stopped prior to Exit 3 (Shady Grove Road).

An initial investigation indicates the driver of the Toyota van was traveling westbound on the ICC/MD 200 when he reportedly observed another vehicle pull alongside the passenger side of his van. The second vehicle was described as a black sedan that was being driven without headlights on. The driver of the van reported hearing a loud noise and seeing a flash from the black sedan. A passenger in the second row of the van indicated they had been struck by something. The driver of the van continued a short distance before pulling over and contacting police.

Responding officers identified evidence suggesting the van had been struck by gunfire once in the passenger-side sliding back door, and the second-row passenger was grazed on the chin. Personnel from the Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Service responded as a precaution, but the passenger was not transported to a hospital.

This is an open and ongoing investigation. The MDTA Police Criminal Investigations Unit continues to collect and review various pieces of evidence. Any witnesses or persons who observed suspicious activity along the ICC/MD 200 shortly after midnight are asked to contact the MDTA Police ICC Detachment at 410-537-6905.
