Kangaroos…in Germantown!

This summer I teased “the coolest thing you can do in MoCo.” I had the amazing opportunity to stop by Roos2u and interact with kangaroos, wallabies, emus, degus, Patagonian cavies, and other fascinating animals…in GERMANTOWN!

This wasn’t a trip to the zoo, it was an educational experience that involved bottle feeding, photo opportunities, handing out treats, and the opportunity to hold a joey in my arms like you would a baby.

When I arrived a homeschool group was wrapping up their visit– half of the kids were crying because they didn’t want their experience to end!

Sitting down with Roos2u owner and primary caretaker, Cassidy Jagger, was a treat in itself. Within the first minute of our conversation you could tell how much she cares for these animals. We spent the first thirty minutes chatting and learning about the animals while we played with a young emu that was hanging out with us the way a kitten or puppy would.

Cassidy is a MoCo native! Growing up she went to Rockville High School and was even the person in costume as the ram at sporting events and pep rallies.

The safety and well-being of these animals is the number one priority. You won’t see these animals performing tricks, the entire facility is cleaned daily from top to bottom, and Roos2u strives to give the animals a “mob” (the social structure of macropods) to rely on for support and bonding.

The animals typically enjoy interacting with human visitors, but they’re never forced to. If an animal doesn’t want to interact…they simply don’t. Sometimes you’ll see animals remain in their “safe zone,” away from any visiting humans.

Though the facility is in the backyard of Cassidy’s home, it is agriculturally zones and USDA licensed. It has been here for about four years and Cassidy tries to grow as much of their food as possible, since 75% of what they eat comes from grazing.

Packages start at $160 PER GROUP (not per person) for this unique experience. You can read more about Roos2u and the packages they have available on their website: www.roos2u.com
