Updated to include letter sent home to the Travila ES community
Travilah Elementary School, located at 13801 Dufief Mill Rd. in North Potomac, was in a brief lockdown this afternoon following a domestic incident between two people that are not associated with the school community.
The school was alerted once a person came into the office explaining that help was needed. 9-1-1 was called and a lockdown was issued to ensure the safety of staff and students since both people were on the school property. Once police arrived and secured the area, the school transitioned to a shelter in place. The letter will sent to the school community can be seen below:
Dear Parents and Guardians,
I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to inform you about an incident that occurred outside our school community today, which necessitated a brief lockdown at Travilah Elementary School. Your child’s safety is our utmost priority, and I want to provide you with all the relevant information.
Earlier today, there was a domestic incident in the vicinity of our school, which was unrelated to our school or our students. Law enforcement responded promptly to the situation, and as a precautionary measure, we initiated a lockdown to ensure the safety and security of everyone on our campus.
During the lockdown, all students and staff followed our established safety procedures. We secured all entrances and exits, and students remained in their classrooms under the supervision of their teachers. I want to commend our students and staff for their calm and orderly response during this situation.
I would like to emphasize that at no point were our students or staff in immediate danger. The lockdown was implemented to maintain a secure environment and ensure everyone’s well-being.
The lockdown has been lifted, and normal school operations have resumed. We will maintain heightened vigilance in the coming days to ensure the continued safety of our school community.
Please take this opportunity to discuss the importance of safety procedures with your child. It is essential that they understand the significance of following instructions from school staff during emergency situations.
