Things To Do December 9-11 in Montgomery Parks

‘Tis the season for festivities! Walk through the Garden of Lights display or partake in a candy cane scavenger hunt. “Wood” you believe it, this weekend is our Urban Wood Sale! The full moon was this Wednesday, and although the moon’s waning, there will be plenty of moonlight for a nighttime hike on Friday. Discover these and other activities around Montgomery County for December 9 to 11, 2022.

Get Festive: What better way to spend the holidays than strolling through the area’s best light display? Garden of Lights(opens in a new tab) has one of the brightest one-half mile trails around. New displays at Brookside Gardens include a winter wonderland scene with tall ice-like formations and falling snow, all handcrafted by the experts at Montgomery Parks. Open nightly 5:30 pm to 9:30 pm. Advance tickets required. How about a hike that comes with a bonus? Hidden treats! Seek out candy canes, as well as nature’s red and white treasures, at Meadowside Nature Center, as you hike this self-guided winter wonderland trail. Multiple times are available on Saturday, December 10, for the Candy Cane Woods program: 1 pm to 3 pm(opens in a new tab), 1:30 pm to 2 pm(opens in a new tab), and 2 pm to 2:30 pm(opens in a new tab).

For Sale: At the annual Urban Wood Sale(opens in a new tab), peruse the kiln-dried, planed, or air-dried wood sourced from a variety of trees, including walnut, cedar, pine, poplar, oak, beech, cherry, cypress, and ash. The wood we’re selling comes from tress cut during park maintenance. The sale is Saturday, December 10, and Sunday, December 11, from 8 am to 1 pm or until supplies run out. Free admission!

Nature: Take an evening hike Friday, December 9, under the moonlight at Locust Grove Nature Center. There’ll be a campfire, too! Feel free to bring your own hot dogs or food to warm over the fire at the Full Moon Fridays(opens in a new tab) event, though we’ll provide the marshmallows. Please register and pay for adults and children using ActiveMontgomery. During Wild Forest Time(opens in a new tab) at Black Hill Visitor Center, kids are welcome to build a fort or climb trees! Only one thing is required, and that’s some creative thinking! Meet at the campfire area by Shelter F on Parking Lot 3 in Black Hill Regional Park on Friday, December 11, from 1 pm to 3 pm. Registration on ActiveMontgomery is required.

Volunteer: Help keep your parks clean and volunteer for a Weed Warriors Workday. Take your pick of which day, or days, to lend a hand. Your parks need you! Workdays are at:
Reddy Branch Stream Valley(opens in a new tab) on Saturday, December 10, from 9 am to 11 am
Capital Crescent Trail(opens in a new tab) on Saturday, December 10, from 1 pm to 3 pm
Little Falls Stream Valley(opens in a new tab) on Sunday, December 11, from 1 pm to 3 pm
Fleming Local Park(opens in a new tab) on Sunday, December 11, from 10 am to 12 pm

For these and other activities, visit the calendar of events(opens in a new tab) and Things to Do(opens in a new tab) on the Montgomery Parks website.
