Things To Do in Montgomery Parks January 13-15, 2023

Volunteering: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “Everyone can be great because everyone can serve.” Honor his memory during MLK Week of Service and volunteer with Montgomery Parks. Pick up litter at a park and stream cleanup or remove invasive, nonnative plants at a Weed Warrior event from Saturday, January 14, through Saturday, January 21. Gardening: Thomas Christopher, author of Nature into Art: The Gardens of Wave Hill, gives a virtual tour of Bronx’s Wave Hill Public Gardens and discusses sustainability and climate change during this online presentation on Saturday, January 14, 10 am, brought to you by Brookside Gardens’ staff. Crafts: Start 2023 by making your own upcycle winter journal during this session of Meadowside Nature Center’s Make and Take(opens in a new tab) on Saturday, January 14, at 10 am. Then, create your first entry with a guided zoom in and zoom out activity.

Animals: Birders, twitchers, listers, and dudes. Beginners and advanced hobbyists are invited to Winter Birding at Black Hill(opens in a new tab) on Saturday, January 14, 9 am, to watch birds that winter at Little Seneca Lake. Bring your own binoculars. Spotting scopes provided. Dress for weather.

Fascinated by bees? Brookside Nature Center will be buzzing with activity at Honeybee 101(opens in a new tab) on Saturday, January 14, from 2 pm to 3 pm. Apiarists from Montgomery County Beekeepers Association will be on hand to answer your questions. Meet at the indoor hive.

Exploring: Explore nature through geocaching this weekend. Head with a staff member from Brookside Nature Center for Treasure Hunting in Wheaton Regional Park (opens in a new tab)on Saturday, January 14, 10 am, to hunt for caches. Bring your mobile phone, water, and snacks.

Discover other natural areas of Maryland and observe winter waterfowl van trip with Black Hill Nature Programs’ staff to Jug Bay and Merkle Natural Resources Management Areas (opens in a new tab)on Sunday, January 15. Bring a bag lunch, binoculars, water, and money for dinner for this day-long trip. And, there are other activities to enjoy in the parks, like ice skating(opens in a new tab), golf(opens in a new tab), and tennis (opens in a new tab)at Montgomery Parks facilities.
