UMD Athletics Launches ‘Maryland Marketplace’, a “Cameo” Type Platform That Maximizes NIL Support For Student-Athletes

The University of Maryland Athletics program has announced the launch of Maryland Marketplace, that allows fans and supporters to purchase shoutouts, videos, social media posts, and even ad pitches from their favorite student athletes. The platform, which is similar to Cameo, allows the student-athletes to maximize earnings through Name, Image, Likeness (NIL). The platform includes former Maryland student-athletes like Stefon Diggs, Steve Blake, and more.

Per UMTerps: Maryland Athletics announced the launch of the Maryland Marketplace, one of the first licensed school Name, Image, Likeness (NIL) marketplaces in college sports. The Opendorse-powered marketplace will maximize NIL support for Terrapin student-athletes. Maryland is among the first programs nationwide to provide a single marketplace platform to send supporters to access student-athletes and offer NIL opportunities. The marketplace gives Maryland fans, brands and sponsors the ability to browse, book, pitch and pay current and former Terp student-athletes for NIL activities in one compliant platform, built specifically for the athletes’ needs.

Current Maryland student-athletes from all 20 athletic programs can be found on the Maryland Marketplace. In addition, former Maryland athletes who use Opendorse can also be accessed through the marketplace. “We strive to be a national leader in the NIL space and the launch of the Maryland Marketplace powered by Opendorse is another example of Maryland leading bolding,” said Damon Evans, Barry P. Gossett Director of Athletics. “Our relationship with Opendorse continues to be robust and we are working daily on education and opportunities for our Terp student-athletes to prosper in the NIL era.”

Through the Maryland Marketplace, every Terp athlete will receive an Opendorse profile, which they can customize and promote to fans on their personal social media channels. When offered a NIL deal, athletes receive a notification through the Opendorse app, where they can choose to accept and complete the opportunity. Once completed, the student-athlete immediately receives compensation to their account and can automatically disclose their activity to Maryland Athletics.

“Maryland’s commitment to empowering student-athletes in the NIL space is second to none,” said Opendorse CEO Blake Lawrence. “With the launch of this marketplace, every Terps fan and alumni can now find, pitch and support every Maryland student-athlete with one proven platform. Year two of NIL is here, and University of Maryland student-athletes are poised to benefit in a big way.”

The Opendorse marketplace is built on a decade of athlete marketing technology and experience. Opendorse has facilitated hundreds of thousands of NIL deals and endorsements with athletes at all levels of sports. The Opendorse marketplace is used by more than 80,000 athletes to manage deals from pitch to payment, and even tax preparation.

In addition to the Marketplace, Maryland continues several other areas of its partnership with Opendorse, receiving full access to the all-in-one NIL platform. Maryland continues to provide its student-athletes and staff with Opendorse’s best-in-class compliance, content and education tools:

  • Compliance: upon completing a deal, athletes can automatically disclose activity details to their institution to ensure eligibility.
  • Content: athletes have on-demand access to share photos and videos from games, practice and more.
  • Education: athletes receive in-person and on-demand virtual education sessions from industry leaders at companies including Meta, Overtime, Players’ Tribune, Opendorse and more.
