Wayne Rooney, widely considered one of the best players of his generation, has agreed terms to be the next manager of D.C. United, according to an ESPN report. Per the report, he “will join up with the club once the final details are worked out and he acquires the necessary work visa”
This will be Rooney’s second stint with D.C. United, having previously joined the team as a player back on 28 June 2018, when he signed a three-and-a-half-year deal with the team. He ended his time in the MLS in October of 2019 with 23 goals and 15 assists in 48 regular-season appearances. He had a total of 25 goals in 52 appearances for D.C. United.
On August 6, 2019, Rooney agreed a deal to return to England as a player-coach with EFL Championship side Derby County in January 2020. At Derby, Rooney was named a captain upon arrival and scored six goals in twenty four appearances. He removed himself as a player in November of 2020 after being given full control of the side and officially retired from playing to focus more managing the team in January of 2021.
D.C. United is currently second to last in the Eastern Conference of the MLS with a 5-10-2 record.
