Weis to Close Gaithersburg (Walnut Hill) Location

Weis will close one of its two Gaithersburg locations (16567 S Frederick Ave. in the Walnut Hill shopping center) around Labor Day, a store representative told us this morning.

The Walnut Hill shopping center has seen the grocery store change names relatively frequently through the years, though current plans for the location are unknown.

Weis locations in Gaithersburg in Russell Ave. and in Damascus will remain open.

should check the managing skills, not the 1st one to close after her running it. thats sad. instead of closing the store get rid of management

  2. I’ll be perfectly honest. For whatever reason, that seems to be a marginal location for any supermarket. You would think that the location would be good, right on MD 355 and not all that close to the Giant on Crabbs Branch Way, but Food Lion failed there, followed by a Food Line Budget store that also failed. I think there might have even been something else there before Weis. I’m sorry to see it close. I shop there occasionally for things I can’t find elsewhere and it’s convenient to my office.

    • The Food Lion stores in Gaithersburg changed over to Weis because the parent companies of Giant and Food Lion merged. They did not want the chains to compete with one another in the same market and Giant is the higher profit chain, so they sold the franchise rights to Weis. The closure of the Food Lion there was not due to failure.

  3. The person that waited on me one time said it was originally a Grand Union, followed by an A&P, Super Fresh, then a bookstore I believe. Then Food Lion, Bottom Dollar back to Food Lion and then Weis. Needless to say a lot of supermarkets in that spot!

  4. fyi – need to be on the same page as your photographer, that is not a photo of the Gaithersburg (Walnut Hill) location. That is more than likely the Weiss near Costco.

  5. Just went to look for their specials, and the store did not show up on Weis Markets’ store directory. I am not surprised, and I have seen this in other FTC-forced divestitures in the past. Royal Ahold/Delhaize had to shed a bunch of stores when Delhaize (Food Lion) and Royal Ahold (Giant) merged. Remember that Weis was in the Festival on Muddy Branch Road, only to retreat. Chains like Food Lion, Giant, and Weis don’t want stores this small anymore. The only food stores that go into these locations anymore are the International supermarkets. I wouldn’t be surprised Russell Avenue gets closed down if Weis is leasing this store.
