Overnight Work Beginning September 7 is Part of Seminary Bridge Replacement; Single, Multiple Lane Closures Expected Through Fall

(September 2, 2021) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will begin work Tuesday, September 7, to resurface a section of I-495 (Capital Beltway) in the Silver Spring area of Montgomery County. Beginning 9 p.m.

Tuesday, crews will mill the top layer of asphalt and resurface it with a new layer and apply new pavement markings to I-495 between MD 97 (Georgia Avenue) and MD 185 (Connecticut Avenue). Crews will continue the work nightly, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. the next morning, Sundays through Fridays each week until the expected completion this fall.

Motorists should expect single and multiple lane closures while this work is taking place. Crews may also require single and multiple lane closures weekdays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., for other activities related to the project.

This resurfacing is part of the $9.1 million Seminary Road Bridge replacement project, which is expected to complete later this fall. During the resurfacing, crews will work simultaneously on the Inner and Outer loops of I-495 to expedite this phase of the project. Once resurfacing is complete, crews will continue painting the new bridge using the off-peak overnight work hours. Learn more about the project HERE.

MDOT SHA works hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones for our crews as well as our customers. Drivers need to stay alert, focus on driving and look for reduced speed limits, as well as other driving pattern changes. Please drive like you work here and slow down in construction zones.

Motorists can dial #77 or 911 on their mobile device for roadside assistance.
