WSSC Water Lifts Boil Water Advisory Affecting Customers in Cabin John/Glen Echo Area; Customers in Affected Area Advised To Take a Few Final Precautions

WSSC Water has lifted the precautionary Boil Water Advisory (BWA) as of 4:33 p.m. today for customers in the Cabin John/Glen Echo area of Montgomery County. Two consecutive rounds of water quality tests were performed by WSSC Water and all results confirm that the water is safe to consume.

While there is no evidence of contamination in the impacted area, WSSC Water asks customers who were under the BWA to take a few final precautions:

  • Run all cold-water lines for five minutes.
  • If you have a single-lever faucet, set it to run cold water.
  • Begin with the lowest faucet in your home or business and then open the other faucets one at a time, moving from your lowest floor to your highest.
  • After five minutes, turn off your faucets in reverse order, from highest to lowest.
  • You should also flush your refrigerator’s water lines.
  • All ice made since the precautionary BWA was put in place on Thursday evening (8/11) should be thrown out, as well as the next three batches.
  • Ice maker containers should be wiped clean with a solution of two tablespoons bleach to one gallon of water.

Type your address in the interactive map to find out if you are located in the affected area and should follow the final precautions listed above.

If you experience problems after performing the above procedures, or have questions, please visit wsscwater.com/bwa or call our Emergency Call Center at 301-206-4002.

The precautionary BWA resulted from a break on a 12-inch diameter pipe on Thursday evening (8/11) that runs along MacArthur Boulevard. The precautionary BWA affected approximately 2,200 customers in the Cabin John/Glen Echo area. Repairs to the water main were completed Friday morning (8/12) and water service was also restored Friday morning.
