A federal judge has halted the merger of Kroger and Albertsons, following a lawsuit led by Maryland Attorney General Anthony G. Brown, the FTC, and a coalition of states, citing potential risks of reduced competition and higher food prices nationwide. Kroger operates in Montgomery County as Harris Teeter, while Albertsons operates as Safeway. Kroger would have acquired Albertsons in the merger.

A Maryland court upheld a Final Order against Finish Werks Corp., its owner William Karl “Harris” Woodward, and related companies for over 800 violations of state consumer protection laws, requiring them to pay more than $955,000 in restitution and penalties and cease homebuilding activities unless a $700,000 bond is posted. Starting October 1, all DUI/DWI offenders in Maryland, including those receiving probation, will be required to install an ignition interlock system under a new law aimed at closing a loophole in Noah’s Law, which previously allowed 60% of offenders to avoid this requirement. Montgomery County Police Officer Noah A. Leotta passed away in December 2015 after being struck by a drunk driver while performing a traffic stop on Rockville Pike. Leotta was working that night as part of the department’s Holiday Alcohol Task Force.
