With excitement over the rising jackpot, the number of prizes won across the other eight prize tiers keeps growing. In the July 28 drawing, there were a total of 3,157,597 winning tickets across all tiers. Of those, 586,903 included the optional Megaplier (available in most states with an extra $1 purchase), which multiplies all standard non-jackpot prizes by a factor of 2x to 5x; Friday night’s Megaplier was 5x. In the current Mega Millions matrix and Megaplier configuration, which has been in place since October 28, 2017, there has never been a Megaplier of 5x drawn at this extraordinary jackpot level. That means a lot of prizes in other tiers have been multiplied by a factor of five!

They include a big $5 million winner in Pennsylvania, one of five tickets nationwide that matched the five white balls for the game’s second-tier prize. Another Pennsylvania ticket takes home the standard $1 million prize in the July 28 drawing, along with tickets in Arizona, California and New York. Across the country, 92 tickets matched four white balls plus the Mega Ball to win the third-tier prize. Fourteen of those tickets are worth $50,000 each, because they also included the optional Megaplier. The other 78 win the standard $10,000 each.

Winning Mega Millions tickets worth $1 million and $40,000 remain unclaimed as of July, 31, according to the Maryland Lottery.  The $1 million ticket was sold at Pine Liquors (9231 Oxon Hill Road) in Prince George’s County and the $40,000 Mega Millions Megaplier ticket was sold at Giant (8100 Loch Raven Boulevard) in Towson. This Tuesday’s night’s Mega Millions drawing has a jackpot worth an estimated $1.05 billion ($527.9 million cash.) As the Mega Millions jackpot continues to grow, the game produced another millionaire in Maryland on July 25 in Fort Washington. An additional 29 players across the state won prizes of $10,000 or more playing a variety of Lottery games in the past week.

Per Mega Millions: “For the fifth time in its history, Mega Millions® will offer a jackpot in excess of a billion dollars! After no ticket matched all six numbers drawn Friday night – the white balls 5, 10, 28, 52 and 63, plus the gold Mega Ball 18 – the estimated jackpot grows to $1.05 billion ($527.9 million cash) for the next drawing on Tuesday, August 1. That prize would equal the fourth-largest Mega Millions jackpot to date. The jackpot has been rolling since it was last won in New York on April 18, and Tuesday’s drawing will be the 30th in this current run.

The player, who is a cartoon fan and chose to remain anonymous, picked the nickname “Elmer Fudd” to tell the story of his win. While running errands, the 73-year-old stopped at Hillandale Beer & Wine in Silver Spring to buy beer and noticed the Corvette Cash scratch-off. He couldn’t take his eyes off of the $5 game.

Having won second-chance prizes in Lottery promotions, “Elmer Fudd” knew the game had a second-chance promotion. He added the scratch-off to his cart, purchased his items and quickly headed home. Only hoping to win a prize equal to the money he spent, the Montgomery County man scratched off the instant ticked and quickly realized it was worth much more than $5. “I couldn’t believe my eyes,” he said. “I was very surprised because I’ve never won that much money at once. I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me.”

The Silver Spring winner signed the back of his ticket, made an appointment and claimed the $50,000 prize this week. He shared with Lottery officials that he has been saving up to purchase a home. He is one step closer, thanks to the big win.

The Prince George’s County retailer, Route 1 Liquors located at 10500 Baltimore Avenue, is a winner, too. The business will receive a $500 bonus from the Lottery for selling a top-prize winning scratch-off worth $50,000. The $50,000 Cash instant ticket went on sale in December 2022 with 160 $50,000 top prizes; there are 98 top prizes remaining along with others that range from $20 to $5,000. The Mega Ball number was 25 and the optional Megaplier number was X4. This Friday’s drawing now has an estimated jackpot of $910 million, with a $464.2 cash option.  Additional details below:

“The last Mega Millions® jackpot offered in July will be a massive one, as the estimated prize for the next drawing on Friday, July 28, is a whopping $910 million ($464.2 million cash). The jackpot is on the verge of $1 billion, a level it has surpassed four times in the past, most recently last January. The big prize rolls after no ticket matched all six numbers drawn Tuesday night – the white balls 3, 5, 6, 44 and 61, plus the gold Mega Ball 25. Friday’s drawing will be the 29th in this current  roll, which began after the jackpot was last won in New York on April 18.

Per the Maryland Lottery: “We have to remember to stop for Powerball tickets,” is what a 30-year-old jackpot chaser said to her family after leaving a gathering last week. It’s a good thing she didn’t forget because the ticket she bought on July 19 turned out to be a $1 million second-tier Powerball winner.

The lucky lady was in disbelief as her husband started reading back the winning numbers. “I knew those were some of my numbers,” said the healthcare worker. “And, when I saw where the ($1 million winning) ticket was bought, I knew it was me.” The big winner just missed the jackpot by one number. She matched the first five white balls but missed the red Powerball, taking home a second-tier $1 million win.
