The Wegmans will be 92,000 square feet, and is planned to be built on the corner of Rockville Pike and Halpine Road. Along with the store, an apartment complex and parking garage will be added to the site. Developers estimate the initial stage of development will be completed by 2024.

The Wegmans is part of a major multi-phase development that was officially approved by the Rockville Planning Commission, according to Bethesda Magazine. The development includes several new apartment buildings, numerous office and retail locations, and a 1-acre park.

We learned today that Mazza Gallerie in Friendship Heights has been put up for auction as a foreclosure. As first reported by the Washington Business Journal and Bisnow Washington, the owner of the property estimates to have lost around $533 million in revenue due to the current COVID crisis.

Mazza Gallerie, located in Friendship Heights, is technically on the Washington, DC side of town. Currently, the stores in the mall include Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, TJ Maxx, and an AMC movie theatre– most of which are temporarily closed at the moment.  Back in May, Neiman Marcus announced bankruptcy; there is speculation that this is a contributing factor to the current sale of the mall.

More young people testing positive for COVID-19

As the pandemic progresses, the distribution of cases has shifted toward young people. This could be a result of increased testing, more risky behaviors, the makeup of the essential workforce, and other factors. Though young adults are less likely to display symptoms, they may unknowingly spread COVID-19 to older and more vulnerable populations, thereby fueling the pandemic.

The Beach at Pike & Rose has a new addition– a sign stating that there are plans for it to be demolished. This may come as a surprise to many, but the intention was for The Beach to be temporary.  It was constructed right before Summer of 2018 and was only supposed to last until Labor Day of that year.  Due to popular demand, the beach was kept open much longer.

We are told that even though The Beach is disappearing, something equally fun and entertaining will replace it. We don’t have any official word on its replacement just yet.

Oddsshark.com and Bovada have released their odds on which city will win the bid for Amazon HQ2. The winning city/area will get about 50,000 high paying jobs. The article states that “Amazon estimates its investments in Seattle added an additional $38 billion to the city’s economy.”

According to the Vegas odds, Northern Virginia comes in first at +240. Washington D.C. comes in second at +350, and Austin is third at +400.

David Leavy, the chief corporate operations and communications officer for Discovery Communications, told Bezos that he should not consider Discovery’s decision to move as a knock against Maryland. “I’m happy to champion Montgomery County whether it’s to Amazon or anybody else.” Leavy said.

The article also states that the former White Flint location is believed to be among the prospective sites. Leavy does not think that MoCo included the old Discovery space in their bid.
