Montgomery County Police Launch New Initiatives to Address Excessive Speeding on 495/270

Yesterday, Maryland State Police, along with the Montgomery and Prince George’s County Police Departments, launched the first of six new initiatives aimed at reducing vehicle related deaths due to excessive speeding and impaired driving.

Around 11AM Monday morning, a Maryland State Highway Administration Contractor was conducting a mobile sweeping operation on Northbound I-270 near West Diamond Avenue (MD-117) in Gaithersburg. As the sweeping convoy was headed northbound, a passing SUV crashed into one of the Contractor’s trucks.

Per the county website, this project will also improve sidewalks, bikeways, trails, paths, and more. Another goal is to make the area more pedestrian friendly by reducing “superblocks”. 


Proposed Grosvenor Metro Closure Met with Strong Opposition

As a result of a sharp decline of Metrorail ridership over the past 11 months due to the COVID-19 pandemic, unless they receive more federal funding, Metro will need to make service cuts, including 22 station closures. Metro is dealing with a budget deficit of about $210 million, with rail ridership down 90% due to the pandemic.
