1177 BC and After: Revisiting the Late Bronze Age Collapse Ten Years Later

Free Lecture to be presented by Eric Cline
Professor of Classical and Ancient Near Eastern Studies and of Anthropology
Director of the GWU Capitol Archaeological Institute

An early version of this lecture was presented at the National Capital Area Skeptics meeting in October 2016, soon after the publication of 1177 BC in paperback. The video of that lecture, posted on YouTube, has now been viewed more than 8.7 million times, with more than 12,000 comments left by viewers.

Since that presentation, much new relevant data has become available, resulting in a revised version of the original book being published in 2021 and a sequel, entitled After 1177 BC, appearing in 2024. This illustrated talk will update the original lecture, presenting a streamlined version of what we now know, or think we know, about the Late Bronze Age Collapse, its aftermath, and its potential relevance to our world today.

Professor Cline’s primary fields of study are biblical archaeology, the military history of the Mediterranean world from antiquity to present, and the international connections between Greece, Egypt, and the Near East during the Late Bronze Age (1700-1100 BCE). He is an experienced and active field archaeologist, with more than 30 seasons of excavation and survey to his credit since 1980 in Israel, Egypt, Jordan, Cyprus, Greece, Crete, and the United States. An award-winning teacher and author of the best-selling 1177 BC: The Year Civilization Collapsed (Princeton 2014; revised edition 2021), he is a National Geographic Explorer, a two-time Fulbright scholar, an NEH Public Scholar, and a Getty Scholar.
