Historic Indigenous Recognition Event to Take Place in Montgomery County, Maryland

The Taino American Indigenous National Organization (T.A.I.N.O.) proudly announces its upcoming signature public event,

“Ariéto Yukayú Guáyiga – An Evening of Strength, Spirit & Survival,”

taking place Thursday, May 28, 2026, from 6:00 PM to 9:30 PM at the Historical Odd Fellows Lodge, located at 1308 Olney Sandy

Spring Rd., Sandy Spring, MD 20860.

This highly anticipated event celebrates Indigenous history, cultural survival, education, and recognition while

highlighting the historic issuance and affirmation of a Montgomery County proclamation recognizing the existence

and cultural contributions of the Arawak Taíno people, and affirming the 4th Saturday in April as the official Arawak

Taíno Cultural Heritage Day.

The event will feature distinguished guest speakers and participants, including:

• Corey Lewis – Assistant Archivist, Maryland State Archives

• Will Jawando – Montgomery County Council Member At-Large

• Natali Fani-González – Montgomery County Council President

• Dr. Stephon L. Scott – Published Author and DEI Expert

• Chali’naru – Renowned Taíno Tribal Dancer and Cultural Performer

Guests will experience cultural performances, educational exhibits, networking opportunities, community engagement, food, and more.

“This event is more than a fundraiser—it is a historic declaration of truth, identity, and cultural perseverance,” said

Denyzio Laboy, Founder of the Taino American Indigenous National Organization. “We are creating space for

education, recognition, and healing while ensuring future generations understand that our people and culture

continue to exist today. We Are STILL Here.”

Media outlets are strongly encouraged to attend this event due to its historical significance, and visual storytelling

opportunities, and participation by government officials, historians, cultural practitioners, and community leaders.
