On Sunday July 12, 2026, “Freedom in Motion: From the Pearl to Palestine,” will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 400 I (Eye) Street SW, Washington, D.C. 20024 at 2:00pm. Four short films (77 Enslaved People Tried to Escape D.C. on a Ship; The Secret Guide That Saved Lives: The Green Book; The Living of Pigeons; and If My Words) will be screened, followed by moderated discussion.
Apartheid and slavery come from the same cookbook— different recipes, same cruelty, control, and dehumanization. Both share one ingredient: legal limits on movement. In April 1848, seventy-seven Black people from D.C. tried to flee their bondage on the Pearl. Under Jim Crow, travel, lodging and even drinking fountain segregation was policed; the Green Book was survival for African Americans. For generations, Palestinians have faced segregated roads and armed checkpoints that choke daily life. Join us for short films and an engaging conversation connecting these dots. Witness, discern, and learn how to act for universal freedom and human rights. Bring a friend and your courage. Sponsored by Voices From the Holy Land Film Series.
