June 19, 2022, best known as Juneteenth/Freedom Day, marks the 157th anniversary of the arrival of Union soldiers and General Gordon Granger in Galveston, Texas. On June 19, 1865, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation, the Union soldiers enforced the President’s order ending enslavement.

About six months after Granger brought the message of emancipation to Texas, Congress ratified the 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution, formally abolishing slavery. Since June 19, 1866, freed slaves have marked the day to celebrate their independence. Juneteenth is also known as Black Independence Day, Freedom Day & Jubilee Day.

Last April we let you know about North Pointe at Flower Hill, a new 16,000 SF retail and restaurant center located at 18251 Flower Hill Way in Gaithersburg. The project is located behind the new Gentleman Jim’s location, which is a sister property to this project and other Flower Hill properties.

We’re told the site has had a slow start with a several major delays related to utilities (PEPCO) and other underground site infrastructure due to the supply chain issues. They are now making some progress and hope to get the site building ready by late summer or early fall.

Burtons Grill & Bar at 109 Commerce Square Pl at the Kentlands in Gaithersburg, which was originally scheduled to open in late May, will now be opening in mid-June, according to representatives from the location. We’re told the delay is due to shipping issues with some of the restaurant’s equipment. The restaurant is currently hiring and permanent signage was installed on the building earlier this month.  Menu items will include braised short ribs, filet mignon, chicken risotto, and market fresh seafood.

Twenty years ago, Kevin Munoz would help his parents clean an office building in Gaithersburg after they worked their full time jobs. They simply called the job “the part time”.  Kevin would help his parents vacuum, take out the trash and any other work that was required to help ease the workload. Fast forward to today, he is now part owner (with his partner Demetra Eftimiades) of a 3,500-square-foot gym right next-door to this office building.

The gym, PEAKPT FITNESS is located at 16021 Industrial Drive Suite 6 (located off of Shady Grove, near Nordstrom Rack and Best Buy.) and is officially opening its doors to the public on May 21 2022.

Corner Pizza & Subs at 18503 N Frederick Ave. will be holding a soft opening on Saturday, May 14, with the official grand opening scheduled for June 3. The restaurant is located in the former Jasmine Bakery Café location (that was previously home to Classic Bakery) in the Gaithersburg shopping center that is also home to Brewster’s Ice Cream. We spoke with owners Nishade and Prabath who told us that the restaurant will specialize in what’s sometimes referred to as “Maryland Style Pizza“, the rectangular pizza you find at local restaurants like Stained Glass Pub, Continental, Gentleman Jim’s, and 4 Corners Pub. Nishade has worked in pizza restaurants since he came to America from Sri Lanka over twenty years ago.
