The Government Operations and Fiscal Policy (GO) Committee will meet on Thursday, June 16 at 10 a.m. to discuss the County’s Racial Equity and Social Justice Action Plan, receive a briefing on County income tax estimates and discuss the Tax Supported Fiscal Plan Summary for the FY23-28 Public Services Program.
The members of the GO Committee include Chair Nancy Navarro and Councilmembers Andrew Friedson and Sidney Katz.
Read the governor’s mobile sports betting letter. “Instead of decisive action to implement the voters’ decision, you have allowed the process to stagnate and become mired in overly bureaucratic procedures that have needlessly delayed the state’s ability to maximize the revenue potential of this emerging industry,” wrote Governor Hogan. “Sports fans in Maryland simply want to be able to place bets on their mobile devices—that’s what they voted for, and they are angry and discouraged over SWARC’s inability to make it happen. … Our state and its citizens deserve clear and definitive action from SWARC and a legal, transparent framework to place mobile bets—not endless bureaucratic roadblocks that continue to hold back progress.”
Ahead of the legislative commission’s next meeting tomorrow, the governor outlines several definitive actions it can take to get mobile sports betting up and running:

“We are currently experiencing multiple incidents of hate in Montgomery County over the past two weeks. On May 31, KKK imagery appeared on internet app searches for Damascus High School. On June 2, in Kemp Mill, antisemitic flyers were posted at Ride-On Station. Last week, on June 7, swastikas were carved at a MARC train station in Garrett Park. And, over past the weekend, flyers with references to groups affiliated with the KKK were discovered in Chevy Chase.
The awards will be presented at a ceremony at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 15, at the Silver Spring Civic Building. Andrea Roane, the long-time anchor at WUSA-9, will serve as emcee. County Executive Mark Elrich and other County officials and dignitaries will present awards.

“Violent crime has increased both locally and nationally, but we can utilize camera technology to help solve these crimes,” Councilmember Rice said. “Police recently used security camera footage to help solve a tragic murder in Germantown. By making security cameras available to members of the community who might not otherwise be able to afford them, we are empowering our residents to help make our communities safer.”

Update: Sitting as the Board of Health, the Council will receive an update on the County’s ongoing response to the COVID-19 pandemic and its recovery and vaccination efforts. The update will include information from Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) about case data, vaccinations, quarantine and testing programs.
The legislation would ensure all-electric building standards become part of the County’s building code guaranteeing construction be primed for a zero-greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions future.
The joint announcement was made at Hillandale Gateway, an all-electric, mixed-use future development in Eastern Montgomery County. The Hillandale Gateway buildings are being designed to Passive House standards with high-performance elements that are extremely energy efficient while also creating comfortable and safe indoor environments.

Amid the rise of antisemitism and attacks against Jews and Jewish organizations, he worked with the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Washington to shepherd $1.5 million through the Council to provide security grants for religious, cultural, and ethnic institutions. Councilmember Friedson was the lead sponsor of a zoning text amendment to allow Bikur Cholim of Greater Washington to build an industrial kosher kitchen within the Bernard Creeger Cholim House in Bethesda in order to offer healthy kosher meals for patients and their families. He has also helped to secure significant County significant support and expanded partnerships for numerous Jewish social service organizations. Councilmeber Friedson has been an effective leader in, from, and for the Jewish community.

ROCKVILLE, Md., June 10, 2022—Montgomery County Councilmember Hans Riemer will join community leaders and the Department of Parks on Sunday, June 12 to announce renovation plans for Johnson’s Local Park, once Montgomery County’s thriving home field for Black Baseball sandlot teams and a center of community gathering in Emory Grove.
The announcement will be made on Sunday, June 12 at 1:45 p.m. prior to the 1st Annual Clarence ‘Pint’ Isreal Juneteenth Classic between the Bethesda Big Train and Gaithersburg Giants of the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League, at Shirley Povich Field. Pint Isreal was a Negro League baseball player from Montgomery County who played at the sport’s highest levels. Isreal was recently selected by the Montgomery County Sports Hall of Fame as a member of their 2022 Class of Inductees.
“At my direction, we are immediately launching a critical $28 million Bay Crossing Tier 2 Study, which will not only study the new crossing, but also look at solutions for the entire 22-mile corridor from the Severn River Bridge to the 50/301 split,” said Governor Hogan. “This is the critical next step which is needed in order to move forward so we can make a new Bay crossing a reality in the years to come, and it is just one more way that together we are truly changing Maryland for the better.”
The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) are following the well-established tiered NEPA process to study potential improvements. This process applies to all projects receiving federal funding or approval.
