Rockville’s very own, “Mad Dog” Mike Curtis, has passed away.
Mike was born in Rockville, Maryland and started playing football as a fullback at Richard Montgomery High School. He went on to excel at playing college football for Duke University as a fullback where he was a two-time All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection and All Time Letterman in his sophomore, junior & senior years.
He played fullback in high school primarily because he had good blocking skills. “I play football because it’s the only place you can hit people and get away with it.” In 1958 he was named High School Player of the Week by the Washington Post, and was also named to the 1960 All Metropolitan Team of High School Players. He was named Outstanding Football Player of the Year in 1960.
Mike Curtis was drafted as a fullback in the first round of the 1965 NFL Draft by the Baltimore Colts.
He played 14 seasons in the NFL; primarily with the Baltimore Colts but also with the Seattle Seahawks and Washington Redskins.
Mike was inducted into Duke University Sports Hall Of Fame in 1981.
