Today in the Circuit Court for Montgomery County, MD, judge Jeanne Cho sentenced defendant, Tyrone Curtis, to life in prison suspend all but 15 years and five years of supervised probation upon release for the murder of 29-year-old Amontae Cunningham. State’s Attorney John McCarthy called the sentence “stunning” and a press release by the office of the state’s attorney referred to the sentence as “disappointing.”
Locally Crafted will reopen at its new location (9 Grand Corner Ave.) in Gaithersburg’s Rio Lakefront on Wednesday, May 1st. The store closed its previous storefront on December 24th, 2023. The new location has taken over the space that was recently home to Francesca’s.
Stephanie Gomer, teacher at Poolesville High School, has been named Maryland History Day High School Teacher of the Year. She will be honored at the Maryland History Day statewide awards ceremony on May 4.

MCPS hosted nearly 1,000 volunteers, lawmakers and county leaders on April 22 for the Resilience, Education, Action, Climate, Habitat (REACH) Hub groundbreaking ceremony and Earth Day volunteer event at A. Mario Loiederman Middle School.
MCPS is hosting this year’s Special Education Family Resource Fair on Saturday, May 11 at Montgomery Blair High School (51 University Blvd. East in Silver Spring). The free event will be held from 10am until 1pm, and is open to MCPS parents, staff and community members.

The Montgomery County Planning Board unanimously approved the Great Seneca Plan: Connecting Life and Science at its April 25 meeting. The plan was developed by the Montgomery County Planning Department and focuses on strengthening the economic competitiveness of the Life Sciences Center, a thriving hub that is host to a diverse population and premier life sciences, medical, and educational institutions and organizations along the I-270 corridor.
