You might know actress Uzo Aduba from her role as Suzanne Warren (also known as “Crazy Eyes”) in the Netflix show Orange is the New Black… but did you know that Uzo has MoCo ties?
In 2003, Aduba performed in the show Translations of Xhosa at the Olney Theatre. She was a student at Boston University at the time and was in the MoCo area for that summer during the span of the production. She earned a Helen Hayes nomination for Best Supporting Actress for the role that she played.
Uzo has recently starred in the Hulu series Mrs. America (2020), several episodes of Steven Universe (2019), Miss Virginia (2019 film), and will star in the upcoming HBO series Americanah alongside Lupita Nyong’o.
The acclaimed actress is also an activist and spreads messages of heritage pride. One of her most notable quotes is about a conversation she had with her mother one day. She asked her mom if she could be called Zoe instead of Uzo because it was easier for her classmates to pronounce. Her mother responded “if they can learn to say Tchaikovsky and Michelangelo and Dostoyevsky, then they can learn to say Uzoamaka.”
