20,000 Pounds of Cheese Balls Survive Beltway’s Latest Truck Wreck

Just after 2PM Monday afternoon, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue units were dispatched to the Outer Loop of the Beltway underneath MD-355 for a vehicle crash involving an overturned tractor trailer.

Crews arrived and learned the truck, which was now on its side,  was carrying 20,000 pounds of cheese balls.

A Hazardous Materials team was called to address diesel fuel leaking from the truck’s saddle tanks. The cheese balls were offloaded and transferred to another truck.

No injuries were reported; several lanes on the Beltway were closed on the Beltway for several hours to get the truck back on its wheels and clean up the leaked fuel.

The Beltway in Montgomery County has seen numerous truck wrecks this year between Georgia Avenue and Bradley Blvd. The Maryland State Highway Administration has placed several Portable Changeable Message Signs advising truckers to slow to 45 MPH through that stretch, as high speeds have been a major contributor to many of this year’s wrecks.
