MoCo’s Brookmont Named “Richest City in Maryland” in List Created by Forbes and MoneyWise

MoneyWise conducted research based on a list created by Forbes that put together a combined list of the “richest and poorest cities in each state.” The list made by Forbes uses data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2019 American Community Survey five-year estimates.

Montgomery County’s Brookmont community was listed as “the richest” area in the state of Maryland. Brookmont is a census-designated place and an unincorporated area in Montgomery County. It is often considered part of neighboring Bethesda because it falls within Bethesda’s 20816 zip code. Previously, in the 1980 and 1990 census, Brookmont was joined with Cabin John as “Cabin John-Brookmont”, but the census area disbanded to form Cabin John and Brookmont as separate areas in 2000.

Forbes magazine analyzed each area in terms of its median household income and mean household income. The list also includes towns, villages, boroughs and census-designated places.

“We conducted some research of our own to determine why each city was designated as the richest or poorest in its state.” wrote MoneyWise.

Richest city: Brookmont

Median household income: $239,943

The Brookmont community is made up of around 200 homes in a variety of styles, from Cape Cod to Craftsman, reported The Washington Post in 2019.

It’s situated near the Potomac River and the C&O Canal, a big draw for outdoor enthusiasts like competitive kayakers and canoeists.

Six properties sold in Brookmont in 2018 for an average close to $1.3 million — the lowest-priced was a four-bedroom and four-bathroom home for $950,000.
