Details of yesterday’s arrest from the Maryland-National Park Police:

At 9:16 am today, officers responded to the Olney Swim Center for a call of a suspicious person. The staff believed the person to be related to prior thefts. Officers arrived on the scene as the person was leaving the property in a vehicle.

Officers attempted to make a traffic stop on the vehicle, which refused to stop and fled north on Georgia Avenue. Officers did not engage in a pursuit of the vehicle. Officers
canvassed the area and put out the vehicle information for other officers in the area. A mile and a half further north on Georgia Avenue officers found a vehicle accident at the intersection of King William Drive.

Witnesses told the officers the driver fled on foot after striking a vehicle belonging to a citizen. Officers began a neighborhood canvas to locate the driver of the striking vehicle. Shortly thereafter, the driver was located in the area of Buehler Court. Officers approached the
suspected driver who then fired one shot from a handgun at close range at a Park Police officer. The shot missed the officer and struck a nearby empty parked car.

The suspect fled from the officers and was located a short time later hiding behind a house. He was taken into custody without further incident. The suspected handgun and shell casing were located in the area. Charges are pending.
