New summer series bringing live performances to parks kicks off May 19.
Montgomery Parks is bringing performing arts outdoors to parks across the county with a new Parks Playhouse(opens in a new tab)and Parks Playhouse Jr. series. (opens in a new tab)Performances take place throughout the summer and will feature live music, comedy, spoken word poetry, theater, and puppet shows. Many of the events feature local artists.
“This new series brings live performances to our parks on a regular basis, all summer long. Park visitors will be able to enjoy music, theater, and entertainment in the beautiful, natural setting of our parks, all free of charge. And these two series really have something for everyone – adults, kids, and families,” said Mike Riley, director of Montgomery Parks.
Performances will feature local lyricists, writers, singer-songwriters, musicians, actors, and comics, and food and beverages will be available for purchase at some of the shows.
The series kicks off on Thursday, May 19, at 7 p.m. at Josiah Henson Museum & Park(opens in a new tab)in North Bethesda with “An Evening of Spoken Word,” focusing on elevating Black voices. The following evening, Friday, May 20, at 7 p.m. is the “Mother of All Comedy Shows” at Waters House Special Park(opens in a new tab) in Germantown.
The Parks Playhouse Jr. series starts on Tuesday, June 7 at 10 a.m. at Ellsworth Urban Park with a children’s puppet show and concert featuring Kidsinger Jim. Other performances include the New Orchestra of Washington, Silly Goose Goes Green ventriloquism, music and dancing, and puppet shows from The Puppet Co.
Audience members are encouraged to bring their own blankets and chairs for seating. Registration is not required.
