Zoe’s Kitchen, located at 19865 Century Blvd in Germantown , will be closing permanently on Wednesday, July 6th, according to a representative from the Germantown location. We are told it will be reopening after approximately 3 months as a CAVA catering hub. CAVA, the fast-casual restaurant that started in MoCo, acquired Zoe’s and its 200+ restaurants in 2018 for approximately $300 million.
Serving a Mediterranean inspired menu with different varieties of salads, pitas and sandwiches; Zoe’s, by 2014 grew, to include over 200 locations across 17 states with plans to expand further. However, the acquisition by CAVA has resulted in a dramatic reduction in Zoe’s locations (some replaced by CAVA restaurants). As of June 22, 2022 there were 90 locations remaining in 15 states, with previous Montgomery County locations in Park Potomac and Gaithersburg closing in recent years.
In 2006, first-generation Greek-Americans Ike Grigoropoulos, Dimitri Moshovitis, and Ted Xenohristos launched the full-service Cava Mezze restaurant in Rockville, with Moshovitis as executive chef. Following the launch of four additional restaurants, in 2008, Xenohristos, Grigoropoulos, and Moshovitis launched a line of dips and spreads to over 200 stores, including Whole Foods Market. In 2009, Brett Schulman joined them as CEO and co-founder of the fast-casual chain Cava (originally called Cava Mezze Grill, later rebranded as Cava Grill and then simply as Cava). They opened the first Cava restaurant in Bethesda, in January 2011.
As of now, we are uncertain if the catering hub will be open for walk-in business. Other CAVA catering hubs in Virginia do not currently offer that option, but one an employee told us it may be an option here.
