With teens obtaining driver’s licenses during the summer more than any other season, the personal-finance website WalletHub today released its report on 2022’s Best & Worst States for Teen Drivers. The state of Maryland has come in ranked as the 4th safest state for teen drivers.
In order to determine the safest and least costly driving environments for U.S. teenagers, WalletHub compared the 50 states based on 23 key metrics. The data set ranges from the number of teen driver fatalities to the average cost of car repairs to the presence of impaired-driving laws.
Teenage Driving in Maryland (1=Best; 25=Avg.):
- 11th – Teen Driver Fatalities per 100,000 Teens
- 18th – Teen DUIs per 100,000 Teens
- 1st – Presence of Distracted-Driving/Texting-While-Driving Laws
- 13th – Premium Increase After Adding Teen Driver to Parent’s Policy
- 3rd – Provision of Teen Driver’s Graduated Licensing Program Laws
- 14th – Vehicle Miles Traveled per Capita
- 7th – Presence of Occupant-Protection Laws
- 1st – Presence of Impaired-Driving Laws
Per the article, “Getting a driver’s license is considered a rite of passage in American culture. But this exciting coming-of-age has instead become a death sentence for thousands of teens each year. Motor-vehicle accidents are the second leading cause of death among the population aged 16 to 19, which also happens to be the age group with the highest risk of crashes.
The financial implications are staggering, too. Motor vehicle crashes involving 15- to 19-year-olds result in around $4.8 billion per year in costs from medical expenses and work loss. That’s not counting the costs of auto maintenance, insurance premiums, possible traffic citations and other vehicular incidents — expenses that can pile up over time.”
