Teriyaki Express Closes After Less Than Two Years in Gaithersburg

Teriyaki Express, located at 405 N Frederick Ave in Gaithersburg, has closed after less than two years at the location. We are told the restaurant closed earlier this summer in the shopping center that is anchored by Megamart and FedEx Office. Another Teriyaki Express remains open at 9128 Rothbury Drive in Goshen Plaza (Montgomery Village).

A replacement has already been tabbed as Charley’s Cheesesteaks will be taking over the location soon, moving from its current Gaithersburg location in the Lakeforest Mall food court. An exact date for the move has not yet been announced, but it is expected in the coming months.

Charley’s is a Philly cheesesteak franchise that opened its first location across the campus of Ohio State University in 1986. While studying real estate at the school, Charley Shin worked in his mother’s Japanese/Korean restaurant in Columbus, Ohio. A wrong turn on a family trip to New York City resulted in Charley’s discovery of the Philly cheesesteak. Charley convinced his mother to sell her restaurant, and invest her life savings of $48,000 into Charley’s, a 450-square-foot restaurant across the street from Ohio State’s campus.

Charley’s first decision in the restaurant was to turn the grill around to face the customers, so they could always see their food being cooked, which has become the trademark of the Charley’s chain– often seen in mall food courts.
