Montgomery Parks to Host Open House about New South Silver Spring Park

Montgomery Parks, part of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, invites the public to an open house at Denizens Brewing Co. on Tuesday, September 20, 2022, from 6 – 8 p.m. Attendees will have an opportunity to learn more about a new park that will be located on the former site of the National Tire and Battery Company, near the intersection of East-West Highway and Georgia Avenue. The future South Silver Spring Park will serve as an active recreation space to complement the historic and contemplative setting of nearby Acorn Urban Park.

Parks staff will share information about the project and initial findings from a community survey about the future park and collect input from attendees about what type of amenities they would like in the park.

WHO: Montgomery Parks staff will share information about the future South Silver Spring Park.

WHAT: The public is invited to a special open house to discuss plans for the new park, which will be situated on a small one-acre urban parcel of land located at 1110 East-West Highway in Silver Spring.

WHEN: Tuesday, September 20, 2022, from 6 – 8 p.m. There will be no formal presentation. Attendees are welcome anytime from 6-8 p.m.

WHERE: Denizens Brewing Co., 1115 East-West Highway, Silver Spring, MD, 20910 (lower level). Food and beverages will be available for purchase.

WHY: Montgomery Parks would like to hear from the public about what amenities are preferred for this new park.

About the new South Silver Spring Park: The South Silver Spring Park will be located at 1110 East-West Highway, the former site of National Tire and Battery. Construction of the park will begin in late 2022 with the demolition of the existing building. The park will open to the public in 2023 and provide opportunities for active recreation, play, seating and social gatherings. The park will also connect nearby public spaces in downtown Silver Spring districts by linking East-West Highway and Kennett Street. The park will connect to the Green Loop, a pedestrian and bicyclist-friendly path proposed in the Silver Spring Downtown and Adjacent Communities Plan, connecting neighborhoods and destinations. Visit the Open Town Hall survey to provide input on the park’s proposed amenities.
