Montgomery Parks announces Emancipation Day Celebration Events

WHEATON, Md. —  Montgomery Parks, part of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, announces events in celebration of Maryland’s Emancipation Day, including activities at our sister agency, M-NCPPC, Department of Parks and Recreation in Prince George’s County. Most events are free.

Maryland Emancipation Day commemorates November 1, 1864, a pivotal day in Maryland’s history when a new state constitution freed all persons held in bondage within its borders.

Freedom’s Footsteps | October 28 through 30 | 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Josiah Henson Museum and Park, 11410 Old Georgetown Road, North Bethesda, Md., 20852

Freedom’s Footsteps is a celebration of Josiah Henson’s emancipation. On October 28, 1830, the Henson family reached Canada and gained their freedom. There will be activities all weekend, for all ages, to reflect on the past and consider ways to build a better future. Free.

Deeply Rooted: A Community Conversation | November 3 | 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.

In recognition of Maryland Emancipation Day, “Deeply Rooted” explores the complexities of discovering the family lineage journey for Marylanders. This open conversation led by Gwendolyn Bankins, Aisha Jenkins, Kyle Reeder and Susan Cook invites guests to learn about their connections to sites of enslavement through interactive talking circles. During this program, participants will have access to spaces for reflection and remembrance. Guests are encouraged to bring a photo of a deceased loved one to honor their memory.  Free.

Adam Francis Plummer Artist Talk and Portrait Unveiling | November 4 | 6:30 – 8 p.m.

Join us for the unveiling of a new portrait of Adam Francis Plummer created by artist Chanel Compton. The portrait commemorates Plummer’s legacy and the hardships he faced while enslaved at Riversdale for over 45 years and the resiliency of the Plummer family through emancipation. Enjoy a talk and reception with the artist in celebration of this new permanent addition to the museum’s collection. This project was made possible with the support of the Riversdale Historical Society and a grant from Maryland Milestones. Registration required by November 2. Free.

Guided hikes on the Underground Railroad Experience Trail will be held at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. The hikes last 1.5 hours, covering approximately two miles of natural surface trails. Ages seven and older. Advance registration recommended by 12 p.m. on the day before the hike. Limited same-day tickets available at the Visitor Center. $8. (Museum admission is free).

Oakley Cabin African American Museum and Park | November 5 | 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Join quilting master, Mrs. Kyna Clemons, in completing our “Freedom Quilt” by creating quilt squares. Other activities include hearth cooking demonstrations, hands-on archaeological activities and guided tours. Master storyteller, Gordon Parks, presents traditional folk tales from 2–3:30 p.m. (Overflow parking available at Mt. Zion Local Park, 5130 Brookeville Road, Brookville, Md., 20882. Free shuttle service provided.) All ages. Free.

Commemorate Maryland’s Emancipation Day at Harper Cabin with living history presentations by the Female Reenactors of Distinction (FREED), traditional African American folktales by master storyteller, Renee Emanuel, and a musical performance by Linda Harris.  All ages. Free.
