A jury convicted Dorsey on January 13th 2023 in a trial prosecuted by Assistant State’s Attorneys Peter Larson and Kimberly Cissel. The charges stem from an incident on November 30th, 2021, when Dorsey forced his way into an apartment along the 12300 block of Treetop Drive in Silver Spring, shooting and killing 39-year-old James Beverly whose eight-month-old daughter and other family members were just feet away, inside of the unit. Dorsey also assaulted two women inside of the apartment. As detailed in court proceedings, Dorsey had previously stayed at the residence with the victims and had a falling out with them, so he was known to them. He was found by police nearly a month later in Colonial Heights, VA.
Here is an adapted summary from court documents:
On November 30, 2021, at around 8:45 am, Montgomery County Police responded to 12301 Treetop Drive, Apartment 32, Silver Spring, Maryland for a shooting that had just occurred. Once on scene, first responders located James Beverly Jr. shot dead. The suspect, later identified as the defendant, had fled the scene. Officers spoke to three individuals that were at the apartment during the murder. Through investigation police learned that the defendant had attacked a woman as she was leaving the apartment. He held her at gunpoint and forced her to go back to the apartment’s front door and ask to be let inside. When the sister of the deceased opened the door, a struggle ensued, and the defendant forced his way into the house. James Beverly Jr. tried to stop the defendant from coming inside and the defendant shot him in the head. The defendant then pushed his way into the house, threatening the deceased’s sister with his firearm and assaulting her. The defendant demanded that she and the other woman, a friend of the family, get a bag for him that was inside the house. When they did not comply with his demands, he fled the scene. The defendant also left town that same day, fleeing to Colonial Heights, Virginia. The defendant changed his hairstyle, turned off his phone, and was not located and found by police until weeks later. On January 13, 2023, after a jury trial, the defendant was found guilty of: First Degree Murder, Felony Murder, Home Invasion, two counts of First Degree Assault, and three counts of Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Crime of Violence.”
