Gaithersburg Names Milly Abdo As Its 2023 Junior Mayor

The 2023 Junior Mayor Contest for the city of Gaithersburg has concluded. Milly Abdo, a fourth grader at Fields Road Elementary School, begins her term on May 1, when she is officially sworn in at the Mayor & City Council Meeting. The ceremony will also include outgoing remarks by 2022 Junior Mayor Loriele Nix of Summit Hall Elementary School. The meeting can be viewed on the City of Gaithersburg’s YouTube channel.

Congratulations, Milly! Her full essay can be seen below:

“Hello, my name is Milly Abdo and I moved to Gaithersburg with my family in August. I participate in Gaithersburg sports and after-school activities. If I were Junior Mayor I would have more after school activities and sports options, because I really enjoy the programs that I’ve done, and I want them to be available for as many kids as possible. I’d like to support unique activities like horseback riding, live music, drama, art and cooking classes.

If I were Junior Mayor I would support the cancer fighters of Gaithersburg. My dad moved to this city because of all of the work being done here in Oncology. I want to make programs like 5Ks and carnivals, activities to raise awareness for our local cancer hospitals, and many fundraiser events for cancer patients and research. I would put the fundraiser money towards laboratories that are trying to make treatments and tests for all kinds of cancer.

If I were Junior Mayor, I would have anti-bullying programs in schools. When I moved here in August, my brother and I were the new kids at school. We both experienced incidences of bullying, but he had it much worse than I did. The most common bullying he complained about was body shaming, while I experienced mean-girl behavior. This is a very painful thing for kids to go through, and we can do more to stop it. I would spend my time as Junior Mayor creating anti-bullying programs and helping to educate kids in school.

Gaithersburg is a great, beautiful city and I would love to support it by being Junior Mayor.”
