On Thursday night we were sent multiple videos from readers across Montgomery County informing us of an unidentified flying object in the sky. The lights appear in a long line that Forbes described as “up to 60 in a long line” and they belong to Starlink, one of many satellites operated by Elon Musk’s SpaceX.
Starlink provides satellite Internet access coverage to over dozens of countries and eventually aims to provide global mobile phone service following this year. SpaceX started launching Starlink satellites in 2019 and as of earlier this year, consists of over 3,580 mass-produced small satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO), which communicate with designated ground transceivers. In total, nearly 12,000 satellites are planned to be deployed, with a possible later extension to 42,000. SpaceX announced reaching more than one million subscribers in December of last year.
