Communication Board Dedicated at Cedar Grove Elementary School

Gunnison Consulting Group, Inc. donated a communication board to Cedar Grove Elementary School located on Ridge are in Germantown. The board was donated in a dedication ceremony earlier this week (photos below). A communication board is a sheet of symbols, pictures or photos that a child will learn to point to, to communicate with those around them. “As someone that not only has familial attachments at Cedar Grove, but also personally attended, I am ecstatic to be able to help initiate this communication board with the help of my company, Gunnison Consulting Group, Inc.” said Phoenix Young of Gunnison.

The Autism Program at Cedar Grove Elementary School services students, K-5. The students have specific needs in the areas of social, developmental, academic, communication, fine-motor, and behavioral learning. The program provides access to Alternate Academic Learning Outcomes aligned with MCPS curricula. Students receive intensive instruction based on the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis. Instruction is delivered in a highly structured setting with a low staff/student ratio to improve learning and communication that provides inclusive opportunities with non-disabled peers.

Gunnison Consulting Group, Inc. serves the Federal Government by taking on its most ambitious technology projects since 1994. It has been recognized as one of the 20 Fastest Growing Companies to Work in 2021 by The Executive Headlines. As a part of growing, the philanthropy group at Gunnison was developed two years ago and has been working to impact communities in need by choosing one community each year to focus on. Last year we focused on the community of Prince George’s County, providing funds for after school programs, volunteering at food banks, and food drives, as well as many other events.

This year Gunnison Consulting Group, Inc. is focusing our efforts on the IDD community. We will be even holding a brown bag meeting with a panel to help better inform our employees about the IDD community. (Please let us know if you or any of your staff are interested in being a part of this panel, Thursday, March 23 at noon, I know during the middle of the school day). This communication board is just the beginning, we are working on many other opportunities for us to best serve the IDD community.
