Metro Lift Income-Qualified Fare Begins Enrollment

Per WMATA: Metro is making it more affordable for tens of thousands of Metro customers across the region. Today, customers can begin enrollment in Metro Lift, an income-qualified reduced fare program approved by Metro’s Board of Directors in the Fiscal Year 2024 budget.

The program’s launch, announced earlier this month, will provide a 50 percent discount on Metrorail and Metrobus fares for customers who qualify. The discount will reduce the cost of a bus trip to just $1 and rail fare to as little as $1 and no more than $3 depending on how far you travel.

“Metro Lift expands our reduced-fare program offerings and provides another opportunity for us to make transit accessible,” said Metro General Manager and Chief Executive Officer Randy Clarke. “Everyone deserves safe, affordable, and reliable transportation, and Metro Lift provides more access for those who need it.”

Customers who receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits in Maryland, Virginia, and DC qualify for Metro Lift and can enroll at Appointment scheduling also opened today for in-person for in-person enrollment which begins June 26. Customers may make appointments online or by calling 1-888-SMARTRIP (1-888-762-7874) for the following enrollment centers in DC and Maryland:

  • Metro Center Station
    12th & F Street NW – Mezzanine Level
    Washington, DC 20005
  • Metro Headquarters
    300 7th Street SW, Washington, DC 20024
  • New Carrollton Metro Offices
4100 Garden City Dr, Hyattsville, MD 20785

Metro is working with partner agencies and service providers to add other locations in the region.

Once you enroll online, the discount will typically be available to load on your SmarTrip card within 48 hours or less and added immediately if you enroll in person.

You will need a SmarTrip® card and one for each person in your SNAP household, an active SNAP Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card and SNAP benefits summary if applying for your household, a current government-issued photo ID from the U.S., DC, Maryland or Virginia, and phone number for enrollment.

Metro Lift joins Metro’s other reduced fare programs including student passes, and reduced fare for seniors and those with disabilities. Reduced fare and discounted pass programs may not be combined. Customers should choose the program most affordable for them.
