Per the Comptroller of Maryland: Starting on July 1, 2023, adults can legally use cannabis for recreational purposes. Anyone purchasing cannabis products from a dispensary must show their government-issued ID to demonstrate they are 21 or older. A medical card is still required to purchase medical-use cannabis. Cannabis sales tax update:
If you have a medical-use cannabis card:
- You will still be exempt from paying the 9% sales tax on the amount of cannabis that does not exceed your provider’s certified amount.
- You will pay the 9% sales tax for cannabis purchased that exceeds your provider’s certified amount.
- You will pay a sales tax on other goods purchased at the dispensary but not cannabis products.
If you do not have a medical-use cannabis card:
• You will pay the 9% sales tax on all cannabis products.
