Montgomery County Public Schools released the following community message on Friday, June 30:
“Dear MCPS Community,
Please note that due to poor air quality caused by wildfire smoke streaming from Canada, local conditions are currently in Code Red status, “Unhealthy” for all individuals. Sensitive groups, including individuals with chronic heart or lung conditions, older adults, and children, are at higher risk for negative health effects. These groups should avoid outdoor activity and monitor closely for symptoms. All others should limit outdoor exertion.
The CDC describes possible symptoms of and tips for reducing the effects of wildfire smoke pollutants. We encourage all students, family members, and staff to learn more about the possible health risks related to current conditions and how to protect their health.
MCPS Athletics will follow NCAA air quality recommendations for participation, which include exertional activities that are shortened and reduced intensity. Sensitive athletes will be moved indoors.
Non-MCPS groups using MCPS outdoor facilities or community partners hosting MCPS students for outdoor summer activities are strongly encouraged to also follow Air Quality Action Guide recommendations endorsed by the Maryland Department of the Environment.
MCPS will continue to monitor and will provide any updates as necessary.”
