Marc Elrich has released a statement on the news of the Purple Line opening at least seven months later than the previous estimate and costing $148 million more. His full statement can be seen below:
“After years of waiting on the Purple Line to be completed, we are once again seeing this project beset by delays and increased costs. This is not good news. But it’s not surprising.
This public private partnership deal has been a ‘poster child’ for how not to do a major transportation project.
From the beginning of this process, I have been clear about the perils of engaging in a poorly conceived and constructed public private partnership. Taxpayers and transit riders will continue to pay for the mismanagement of the Hogan Administration. We deserved better.
I appreciate Governor Moore’s and Secretary Wiedefeld’s leadership and transparency and their continued investment in the region. I hope, as we move forward with critical transit investments in the region and around the state, we continue to be transparent on the costs and honest about the limits of the private sectors’ ability to deliver on critical projects such as the Purple Line.”
