The University of Maryland was included in Newsweek’s 2023 list of America’s Greatest Workplaces, one of only eight universities recognized among the 1,000 major employers.
The rankings, based on a large-scale study conducted in collaboration with data firm Plant-A Insights Group, evaluated and scored companies based on eight categories: company image, corporate culture, working environment, work-life balance, training and career progression, compensation and benefits, sustainability awareness, and proactive management of the diverse workforce. UMD earned four out of five stars in the list released this month.

Pines. “At Maryland, we are committed—as our very own strategic plan states—to investing in people and communities. This distinction drives us to continue our enduring work to create a culture of care, inclusivity and professional advancement.”
The overall list was determined through an employee survey of more than 61,000 respondents living in the United States and working for U.S. companies that employ at least 1,000 people. The study collected more than 389,000 reviews.
“Companies benefit from creating great workplaces,” Nancy Cooper, Newsweek’s global editor-in-chief, wrote in a statement. “Experts say employees who like their work are more productive, and these employers have lower turnover rates. By staying at companies longer, loyal employees contribute to organizational stability and consistency. Ultimately, this enhances the bottom line.”
