Scrap Tire Recycling Collection Event Scheduled for Sept. 25-29 at Shady Grove Processing Facility and Transfer Station

“The more items we can put to reuse the better for all of us, said County Executive Marc Elrich.”This event is a convenient opportunity for residents to do their part for our environment by turning old tires into new products and materials. By recycling more materials, we are throwing away less trash which moves us closer to our zero waste goals.”

The event is a partnership with the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) and Maryland Environmental Service (MES).  Funding for the event is from Maryland’s used tire clean-up and recycling fund, which is paid for by the $0.80 recycling fee on the sale of each new tire. MDE and MES may use the fund for projects to reduce, recover and recycle scrap tires in Maryland. The transfer station routinely accepts a maximum of five tires per year from residents.

Recycled tires can be repurposed as rubberized asphalt, wastewater treatment filters, building materials, erosion control and can also be used as an alternative fuel.

When arriving at the Shady Grove Processing Facility and Transfer Stations, residents should follow the signs to recycling area and look for the trailer marked “tires”. Additional reminders:

• Tires must be clean of dirt and mud.
• Only small truck and passenger car tires will be accepted; no commercial tires are allowed.
• Commercial haulers or generators of scrap tires will not be permitted.
• Tires may be up to 33 inches in diameter. Tires with or without rims are accepted. Bicycle tires are tubes are also accepted. Bicycle tires and tubes.
• A driver’s license is required to track the number of tires each resident brings to the facility.
