Strike Averted as Local Commercial Office Cleaners Reach Tentative Agreement

“STRIKE AVERTED! ¡SÍ, SE PUDO!” was announced by 32BJ SEIU on Tuesday, as Washington DC, Maryland, and Virginia office cleaners reach tentative agreement. Last Friday 32BJ SEIU members marched during rush hour in Downtown Bethesda to “let employers know that commercial cleaners are in the fight for wages that keep up with inflation.” Below you’ll see the details of Tuesday’s announcement:

Pending ratification, @32BJSEIU commercial office cleaners have reached a tentative agreement with the Washington Service Contractors Association for a four-year contract covering 9,100 workers in D.C., Baltimore, Arlington, Fairfax, Loudon, Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties. The group will hold ratification votes in each region next week. 🗳️

Workers will receive an hourly wage increase of $3.55 to $3.75 over the life of the four-year contract. Cleaners currently earn hourly wages between $12.50 and $18.60 varying by market. “These men and women proved that collective action has the power to improve jobs and lives, just like other low-wage workers deserve nationwide,” said 32BJ Executive Vice President, Jaime Contreras.
