Seneca Valley High School Sophomore, Sanaa Chege, Writes Children’s Book

Sanaa Chege, a sophomore at Seneca Valley High School in Germantown, has written a children’s book about her experiences on the diving team at school. She began diving just last fall and now dives year-round. After seeing a lack of diversity on her team, she decided to write a book to share her journey to encourage and inspire others. Her children’s book, “A Diver Like Me” will be published in February 2024.

Additional information, per her website: “Sanaa B. Chege is not your typical high school student. Hailing from Maryland, Sanaa is a young trailblazer who has been making waves, both in and out of the pool. Her journey into the world of competitive diving began in the fall of 2022, and it’s been nothing short of extraordinary.

When Sanaa isn’t gracefully diving into the water, she’s embracing her passion for travel and cherishing moments spent with family and friends. Yet, her commitment to her community stands out as one of her most remarkable traits.

Sanaa finds fulfillment in giving back to her community. She dedicates her time to volunteering at the local Boys & Girls Club and takes an active role in various activities through her Girl Scout Troop. Her pursuit of the prestigious Gold Award exemplifies her determination to create positive change.

But perhaps, it’s in the pool where Sanaa truly shines. She continues to hone her diving skills with unwavering dedication, all while nurturing a dream to dive at the collegiate level in the coming years. Sanaa’s journey reflects her tenacity, resilience, and a boundless belief in the power of dreams.”

Why She Wrote the Book, per her website“A Diver Like Me isn’t just a story for Sanaa—it’s a mission. Inspired by her own experiences as a young diver, Sanaa was determined to break down barriers and pave the way for more diversity in the world of competitive diving.

She believes that representation matters. Sanaa’s passion for the sport led her to recognize the need for more young divers who looked like her and came from diverse backgrounds. She knew that by sharing her journey, she could become a source of encouragement and inspiration for other young Black girls who might be considering diving.

In her own words, Sanaa says, “If we see ourselves represented in those spaces, we will start believing that our goal to expand those spaces will be attainable!” With “A Diver Like Me,” Sanaa aims to be that voice of encouragement and proof that dreams are achievable, no matter who you are or where you come from.

This book is Sanaa’s way of reaching out to the world, fostering inclusion, and inspiring the next generation to chase their dreams—both in and out of the water. It’s a story of passion, family, and the unyielding belief that diversity is the key to progress. Sanaa is not just an author; she’s a catalyst for change.”
