MCPD Warns “Don’t Veer For Deer”

The Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) recently provided a traffic tip, warning drivers “don’t veer for deer.”

Montgomery Parks recently urged the public, especially drivers, to “use caution this fall, as deer activity reaches its peak. Late October through early December constitutes most of the rut, or breeding season, for white-tailed deer in central Maryland. During this time, deer activity is at its highest.”

Montgomery County Police provided the following tips:

  • Watch for deer during early morning or evening hours
  • Slow down when “Deer Warning Signs” are posted
  • When safe, and necessary, use high beams on dark roads
  • Never swerve to miss an animal, stay in control at all times
  • If you see one deer, there are usually more
  • If you get into a collision involving a deer, if there are no injuries and the vehicle is drivable call (301) 279-8000
  • If you get into a collision involving a deer and there are injuries or you need a tow, call 9-1-1
