The National Weather Service (NWS) has extended the advisory that now encompasses all of Montgomery and Howard counties to start at 7am and go until 2pm.
The storm is expected to start anytime between 7am and 10am, likely as snow or freezing rain in most areas. Temperatures have already dropped below freezing in many places so it will be cold enough for things to stick or make things messy in the morning hours. As we move towards the afternoon, it will change over to a mix/all rain for most areas.
Not much is expected in terms of accumulation, with the latest “Expected Snowfall” map by the NWS showing less than an inch for almost all of Montgomery County. The 1-2 inch and 2-3 inch range can be found further north and west, including Frederick, Loudoun, and Washington counties.
The “Reasonable Worst Case Scenario” map shows between 1 inch for parts of Montgomery County closer to DC and up to 4 inches for northern areas. The “Low End Amount” map shows no snow at all for the entire county. Both of these scenarios each have a 10% chance of happening, with the “Expected Snowfall” map at 80%. Ice has entered the conversation for parts of Montgomery County, and that can be seen in the “Ice Accumulation Map.” All four maps can be seen below, courtesy of the NWS.
