“Damaging Winds” Expected as Potent Storm Crosses the Region; High Wind Warnings in Effect

In a Tuesday afternoon update by the National Weather Service, Hugh Wind Warnings have been issued for a lot of the area.

“Damaging winds are expected later this afternoon & evening as a potent storm system crosses the region. Highest wind gusts in excess of 40-55 mph will occur between 5-10pm this evening. Locally higher gusts are possible over the ridges/waters. More wind Wednesday.”

Per the NWS, the high wind warnings will be in effect starting at 3 PM in DC, Prince Georges, Charles, Central and Southeast Montgomery and Central and Southeast Howard Counties in Maryland. In Virginia, Fairfax, Stafford, King George and Central and Southeast Prince William/Manassas/Manassas Park Counties, and Arlington/Falls Church/Alexandria.

“Southeast winds of 25 to 40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph are expected. The warning lasts until 1 AM EST Wednesday. Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.People should avoid being outside in forested areas and around trees and branches. If possible, remain in the lower levels of your home during the windstorm, and avoid windows. Use caution if you must drive.”
