MCPS has two built-in “snow days”, as stated in the MCPS calendar (seen below). Both have already been used, as the school system closed for two consecutive days on January 16th and 17th due to inclement weather and persistent difficulties in ice removal.
Per the calendar, “if the school year is disrupted by emergencies and schools are closed three or more days, dates identified as possible make-up instructional days include: November 1, 2023; January 29, March 25-26, April 10, April 22, June 14 and June 17-18, 2024.” This list of dates does not apply to Arcola and Roscoe R. Nix elementary schools, which follow the innovative school calendar.
This means that the next snow day will have to be made up during one of the listed make-up dates, if students do not participate in virtual learning. With the potential of more winter weather coming this Friday, we have been told that a “Code Purple” (Virtual Learning Day) is being discussed if the weather is bad enough to close schools. We have reached out to MCPS for comment or additional information regarding that possibility.
We will have an update later this evening on the potential winter storm coming our way on Friday and a “Pencil Prediction” (if necessary) for Thursday.
